SINCE the outbreak of foot and mouth disease, local people have shown great support for the ban on access to Mary Tavy Common.
On behalf of the Mary Tavy Commoners, I write to thank all those members of the public who have kept off the common. The common is a popular place for walking and horse-riding, and many who use it on a regular basis have made a considerable sacrifice.
Graziers dread the unseen enemy reaching livestock that share the common, but hope that, with the help of the public, control measures can contain the virus and finally destroy it.
We all hope that the common can return to normal use before too long.

ON A visit to town on Friday I could not help but notice the foot and mouth disease disinfecting mats placed at strategic locations.
The one at the exit to Safeway also included two crudely constructed tarmac 'speed bumps'.
All well and good, until you realise that these precautions have been put in place two weeks after the first case was confirmed in the county and a week after Cornwall County Council put theirs in position at the majority of border crossings.
What a comfort it is to know that some jobsworth was sufficiently alert to notice that the disease had bolted and with considerable alacrity managed to firmly close the stable door.
