THIS archive photograph, offered to the Times by Okehampton historians Hilary and Mike Wreford, should attract a good reception from readers.
They sent in a photograph from the 1950s which shows people eagerly anticipating the first transmission of television test signals from the BBC transmitter at Wenvoe.
Wenvoe, located a few miles to the south-west of Cardiff, was the site of the first television transmitting station in Wales.
It was opened by the BBC on August 15, 1952, broadcasting BBC Television on VHF channel 5.
Mike, a member of Okehampton and District Local History Society, said: 'The photograph was taken at the radio/television and general electrical shop John Voaden and Sons (known as just JVS) in Fore Street, Okehampton.
'The engineer in the middle is Duggie Howard, who was now to add television repairing skills to his radio ones! JVS also had a bicycle and general shop in the arcade, and the added attraction for sports people of offering a prompt restringing of badminiton and tennis racquets service!'
