Callington Town 2

Penryn Athletic 0

TWO goals in the final ten minutes put an end to the resistance of the visitors in this entertaining game on Saturday.

Penryn dominated the first 15 minutes, during which they had three good attacking moves but each time they came unstuck in the final third and gradually, the home side began to assert their authority.

Town should have taken the lead on 20 minutes when Chris Tilbury?s incisive move into the box on the left was curtailed by the outstretched boot of a Penryn defender. Most appealed for a penalty, but the referee waved play on.

Four minutes later and the official was the target of more complaints when Matt Shorter appeared to knock the ball into the net after going up to challenge a cross with the keeper. But this time he was adjudged to have fouled Athletic?s No 1 Andy Avery.

The second half brought continued pressure from the home side with Barwell forcing an outstanding save from Avery on 55 minutes.

With time running out, the game exploded into life in the final ten minutes. Micheal Ruark, a second half substitute, weaved his way into the Penryn area and, having beaten all the defence, rounded the keeper only to be hauled to the ground by his outstretched arm. A penalty was awarded, but Barwell?s spot-kick cannoned off the post and clear.

Athletic?s joy was short-lived as two minutes later the breakthrough came for Callington. Tilbury was the creator way on the right and his cross was met by Ruark just two yards out and his shot cleared the line before Avery could clear it and Town were a goal up.

Four minutes later and the game was safe for the home side as a great run from Shorter saw his shot cannon off the post, but Ruark followed up to fire past Avery to the delight of the crowd for his and Callington?s second to secure three valuable points.
