WITHIN one day 17 teenagers training for the Ten Tors challenge were rescued from Dartmoor with hypothermia, suspected broken bones and breathing problems. Members of Dartmoor Search and Rescue teams, Royal Air Force, police and ambulance crews on Saturday worked tirelessly to evacuate the youngsters from harsh weather conditions on Dartmoor. The 17 youngsters were airlifted to Okehampton Camp where ambulance crews and police set up a 'field hospital' to deal with casualties. About 1,000 youngsters and their instructors were practising on the moors on Saturday from schools all over the country. At 10.45am emergency services received the first call of a 14-year-old boy with chest pains on Rival Tor. Okehampton Search and Rescue team went out in their vehicles and teams were dispatched on foot before the air ambulance found the boy and took him back to the camp. Okehampton rescue team was also called to reports of a group of three youngsters with suspected hypothermia on Watern Tor. The team met up with the youngsters and stayed with them until the RAF helicopter arrived. The Tavistock rescue team was called at 2.20pm by South Western Ambulance Services Trust to Willsworthy range to locate and extract a missing Ten Tors team who were in varying stages of hypothermia. Another member was suffering with breathing difficulties. A team was quickly deployed with medical equipment to the area close to Hare Tor and two members of the team located the missing group. While they administered medical treatment the rest of the team followed with a stretcher and other medical equipment. Bill McOwen, controller for Dartmoor Rescue Group, Tavistock, said: 'As the casualties were being treated we requested air support to evacuate the children to a place of safety. 'Within two minutes Rescue 169 from RMB Chivenor was on scene. It turns out that it was dealing with another incident only a few minutes' flying time away from our location. 'They evacuated two of the severe cases and the team walked the remaining four children and one adult off the moor. 'The weather was closing in and the RAF crews displayed some fantastic flying skills for which we are grateful. It was a very busy day as our sister team from Okehampton was also deployed dealing with two further incidents at the same time as our one.'
