WEST Devon youngsters scooped up six medals and a day full of fun at this year's Devon Youth Games recently. Practice and enthusiasm paid off for the youngsters as they collected two gold, two silver and two bronze awards at the annual all-day sporting event against nine other Devon districts. More than 1,000 young sportspeople from all over the county, including over 100 from West Devon, took part in the games, which were hosted this year by Plymouth City Council. Fourteen sports were represented, from the traditional cricket and table tennis, to the more unconventional futsal (a Brazilian football game) and street sports. The aquathlon gold medals went to Jordan Channon, 10, Elliot Boon, 13, Brett Bennett, Rebecca Windermere and Cameron Carpenter-Warren, all aged 14. In the team events, silver medals were won in the Years 7 and 8 Boys' Hockey competition, and Years 7 and 8 Girls' Volleyball. The bronze medals were won by the Years 8 and 9 Futsal team, and Years 4 and 5 Mini-Soccer. Team West Devon came seventh overall. Mayor of West Devon, Cllr Terry Pearce, said: 'This was a wonderful effort by our teams, especially with some very good competition from other areas of the county. 'Everyone can be proud to have taken part in these Games and the way in which they represented West Devon.' Terry Beckett, West Devon Borough Council's leisure officer, added: 'This was a terrific performance from the teams, but more importantly all the competitors had tremendous fun and enjoyed the event hugely.'
