A TEAM of smooth-talking Tavistock College students have secured a place in the national finals of a public speaking competition.
The team of Joe Way, Jed Coiley and Flo Rodgers, aged 16 and 17, shot to success at the regional finals of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition, held at the University of St Mark and St John at the end of March, beating off four other teams from across the South West, which comprised notably older students.
At the regional final, the Tavistock College students presented their pre-prepared speech about genetic medicine and then had to endure a round of questions from the judges.
The judges were particularly impressed with how the students delivered complex, scientific ideas using appropriate levels of humour to engage the audience.
Principal Helen Salmon said: 'We are so proud of the team for putting themselves forward for this fantastic challenge.
'They have worked really hard, dedicating their lunchtimes to help and support each other and we wish them the best of luck going into the final.
'Tavistock College is no stranger to success in the Youth Speaks competition. We have not only been in the top three for the last three years, but we were also runner's up last year.
'Hopefully, this time, we will take the title. Our success only highlights the fantastic team of staff, parents and students that we have at the school.
'I strongly believe events such as these are vital to boost the students' confidence and key skills.
'Furthermore, it will put them in good stead for employment and university applications.
'Skills such as public speaking, quick-thinking and creativity can be applied to almost any career path.'
The students will be heading to Hull University on Sunday (April 28), to go head to head with other finalists from around the UK.
