FOLLOWING their success at County level reported last week, the Mount House Under-11 cricket team, representing Devon, has won the West of England competition. The team will now go forward to represent the region in the National Finals at Oundle School in Northamptonshire against the winners of the North East and South divisions. The Under-11 teams play 8-a-side in the English Schools Cricket Association/Lords Taverners competition, batting in pairs for three overs each, with five runs taken off the total for each wicket taken. The West of England finals were held at King?s Taunton School, and Mount House were up against teams from Bristol Grammar School, St Hilary representing Cornwall, and the Somerset winners Taunton Preparatory School. Two relatively comfortable wins, against Bristol Grammar by 28 runs, and St Hilary by 14 runs, took Mount House through to their final game with Taunton Prep ? a match they had to win to clinch the West of England Championship for Devon. Somerset were put in to bat first, and were restricted to 253 by some good bowling and keen fielding from the Devon team. Needing less than five runs per over, the Mount House boys batted steadily, and by the final over were three runs ahead of the Somerset total, needing only to avoid the loss of a wicket to win. Mikey Cousens successfully blocked out a maiden over and ensured a Devon victory.
