Yelverton seconds v

Kingsbridge seconds

YELVERTON seconds scraped home by a single wicket to beat Kingsbridge seconds in a low scoring affair at Langton Park on Saturday.

The poor weather last week and some torrential downpours on Friday meant that the game was in doubt, but a combination of wicket covers and the sterling efforts of ground secretary John Cowsill meant the game was able to go ahead at the scheduled start time.

Visiting captain Mark Edmonds lost the toss and Kingsbridge were asked to bat first by Yelverton skipper Chris Pearson.

Rob Bennett and Tony Carter opened the bowling for the Bohemians but the Kingsbridge openers progressed cautiously to 48 off 20 overs before Carter had S Taylor well caught by skipper's son, 14 year-old Ben Pearson, at midwicket for 18.

The introduction of the slow left arm of Will Chapman paid dividends as J Ellis was bowled for 5. Dom Rushton bowling from the pavilion end bowled a good seven over spell and was unlucky not to pick up a couple of wickets. Andy Taylor replaced Rushton and his wily left arm slow bowling picked up a further two wickets to leave Kingsbridge on 62-4.

Chapman (2-16) struck again to remove M Hammett, caught by Terry Leonard at short fine leg and Taylor (5-19) picked up another three wickets to complete his five wicket haul and leave the visitors on 86-8. Remaining Kingsbridge opener, Shaun Taylor and No 10 Jerome Innocent put bat to ball in a 26 run partnership for the ninth wicket.

Carter (3-22 off 12.2) returned to finish off the innings, bowling Innocent for 18 and Taylor for 37 to end the innings on 115.

Extras were the second top score on 26.

Yelverton reply got off to a good start, with opening pair Bennett and Chapman scoring at four per over. Bennett raced to his 50 out of the first 63 tuns scored.

The Bohemians looked to be cruising to victory at 71 without loss, but following the dismissal of Bennett for a well played 57, Chapman departed for 7, caught at slip and Tom Watkins for a duck, out lbw.

At 71-3 the odds were still on a Yelverton victory, and fourth wicket pair Gerry Keen and Terry Leonard took the score along to 86 before Leonard was bowled for 7 by Kingsbridge skipper Edmonds (4-24) .

Keen then sliced to cover for 5 to leave the score on 89-5 and Kingsbridge sensed an unlikely victory may be on the cards.

Andy Taylor and youngster Ben Pearson edged the score up but Taylor departed with the score on 97 adjudged lbw off the bowling of S Taylor (3-35).

Ben Pearson was caught at mid-off to leave the Bohemians on a parlous 103-7. The next two wickets produced another eight runs with skipper Pearson lbw with the score 111-9.

Last wicket pair of Dom Rushton and Tony Carter squeezed out the last five runs to see the Bohemians home on 116-9 to claim victory.

Yelverton seconds (16 points) beat Kingsbridge seconds (5pts) by 1 wicket.

n This week Yelverton seconds travel to Newton Abbot to take on South Devon CC, 2pm start.
