Friendly Exeter Saracens III 0 North Tawton A 40 A mixed North Tawton XV blended experience and youth to produce a good team performance which was marred by a serious injury to club president Paul Fewings. Early in the match North Tawton weathered pressure from the Saracens big pack. Tawton responded with a good three-quarters break down the left but they ran out of space 10 metres from the Saracens? line. Having gained territory North Tawton capitalised on it with a good passing move and the final looped pass from Stewart Bowker to David Fewings set him loose to sprint outside the defence and score the first try. This was converted by fly half Paul Fewings. It was evident that the weakness in the Saracens? side was the three-quarter line and some panicked kicking to touch meant they were rarely able to penetrate the Tawton end of the pitch. The Tawton pack set up the next try with a strong maul close under the home team?s posts. The ball was laid back to scrum half Peter Gyde who popped a pass up to Stewart Bowker who crashed through for the try. This was also converted by Paul Fewings. As half time approached a break out by Fewings was completed by Gyde as he outflanked the defence and crossed the try line. Play had been stopped, however, as Paul Fewings went down with what turned out to be a severely dislocated ankle, requiring an ambulance. In the second half the Tawton pack began to establish their dominance. The return of Richard Gould to the front row and the strong driving play of back row Neville Phillips and Steve King saw King opened the second half scoring, when the pack drove over the line. David Fewings deputised for his father with the kicking duties and slotted the conversion. Another break by scrum half Gyde opened up the defence briefly, but this time it closed again as Tawton winger Shyamal Kotecha went for the gap. Opening up the play to the threes was paying dividends and, with good ball by Richard Lethbridge off a lineout, another try came for centre Bowker as he side stepped through the tacklers to touch down. Saracens made a comeback but their chip-kicked attacking move was snuffed out by a good follow-up and tackle by Tawton?s Kotecha. With the Tawton pack now driving Saracens back in the set scrums, the home team were now under severe pressure. From a five metre scrum Tawton?s flanker Steve Hann broke off and dived through the residual defence for his try. A few minutes later and David Fewings crossed for the last try, which he converted. l Next week North Tawton are back in league action, away to Ilfracombe.
