Volunteer search and rescuers from Tavistock supported an emergency call-out for a walker who became ill on the moor.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Tavistock were called by the police at 3.30pm on Wednesday, September 16, to a walker who fell ill near Beardown Tors.

The team was unable to contact the casualty directly to confirm his location, so deployed team members using the information they were supplied with by police.

Members assembled at Holming Beam and members crossed the valley towards the tors on foot, while the team’s new multi-terrain 4×4 took their rescue equipment through Beardown Farm, as close as possible to the tors.

Members reached the location given, but the casualty was not where he was expected, so searches around the tors were started to attempt to locate the casualty.

Eventually, the team made contact with the casualty by phone and he told them he had moved.

A team spokesman said: “The casualty had done the right thing in calling for help as soon as he realised he was in trouble, and had also done the right thing by calling the ambulance service back to tell them he was making his way off the moor.

“A separate small team who had not deployed to the incident was then sent to Beardown Farm by car to meet the casualty and he was checked over by our team doctor.”

The casualty was then given a lift back to his own car and the mountain rescue team was stood down 90 minutes after being alerted.
