Devon and Cornwall league Wellington 17 Tavistock 15 THIS defeat essentially means that Tavistock's chances of promotion at the end of the season have been extinguished. Tavistock started well and dominated the whole of the first half playing some fluent high risk rugby which brought them three tries. However, the score should have been even greater as Tavistock wasted a number of chances with players taking the wrong option. In addition Wellington were able to grab two scores of their own when sloppy defence and then a wayward pass presented them with virtually their only opportunities of the half. The first Tavistock score came after 15 minutes of constant pressure when centre David Goodspeed crossed to claim a try. Wellington immediately struck back and a basic tackling error allowed their right winger James May to score. Tavistock continued to press the Wellington line and after some great approach work involving the Tavistock back row Duncan Law supplied the scoring pass to fly half Josh Sutton. A second Goodspeed try took Tavistock out to a lead of 15 – 5 and they seemed to be comfortably in charge. Just before half time Wellington got a score back when their centre John James intercepted a Tavistock pass to score by the posts. He converted his own score. The second half saw Wellington up their game considerably, especially in the forwards. This starved Tavistock of ball and Wellington grabbed the only score of the half to complete an unexpected win. l This weekend Tavistock entertain Teignmouth in the league, kick off 2.30pm.
