Tavistock is staging a ‘Paint the Town’ day on Saturday (April 2) with local shops and businesses revealing their spring window displays featuring garlands created by local schoolchildren and other community groups.

Organised by the Tavistock Improvement District (BID), the event is designed to bring spring colour, joy and a sense of optimism to traders and shoppers alike. On the day visitors will be able to see what the Tavistock Community Gardeners have been up to around town and make a bird box with Rob the Dartmoor Ranger in Bedford Square from 11am.

Schoolchildren will also be out and about delivering spring flowers to participating businesses. This year the event incorporates the theme of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and is designed to set the tone for the celebrations in the months to come.

BID manager Janna Sanders said: ‘Now in its fourth year, people really have grown to love this small annual event. Encouraging the wider community to get directly involved in brightening up the town centre and helping the high street really does make an impact. It is also a great opportunity to meet the Community Gardening team to learn about their huge contribution to the town.

‘This event has a strong community ethos with schools and other groups all involved and working in partnership with Tavistock BID to celebrate our town. Despite ongoing challenges with Covid-19, we have still had an amazing response from businesses and local groups wanting to be involved. Come in and enjoy the creations!’

The schools and groups taking part are: Mary Tavy & Brentor Primary School, Tavistock Primary School,
St Rumon’s CofE Primary School, St Peter’s CofE Junior School, Lamerton CofE Primary School, Gulworthy Primary School, West Devon Art Workshops, The Scrapstore, Tavistock Community Gardening, 1st Tavistock Rainbows and 1st Yelverton Brownies. You can find out more from Janna on [email protected]
