A SPECIAL event was held at Tavistock Town Hall last week to celebrate a national achievement awarded to the town’s hockey club.

In May, Tavistock Hockey Club’s men’s first team were named ‘Team of the Year’ at the England Hockey Awards in Reading.

As a way to congratulate the team, Tavistock Mayor Cllr Mandy Ewings organised the wine and cheese evening, attended by members of the club and local councillors.

Cllr Ewings said: ‘We put this event on to congratulate the hockey club on a job well done and to honour their amazing achievement.’

The Tavistock men’s first team, who have been undefeated Southern League champions, were chosen from a shortlist of club teams, which included Boots, Wapping and Richmond men’s first teams.

The team was crowned team of the year after winning all 22 of their league games and scoring 126 goals with only 21 goals conceded. They were also Devon Trophy semi finalists and were in the last 16 of the HA Vase.
