Tavistock v Westcountry
AFTER a string of defeats Tavistock Squash Club were looking for a positive end to the first half of the season.
First on was Mike Gray against Ray Spreadbury of Westcountry. Mike had prepared himself for this game both physically and psychologically. He came out all guns blazing taking the match in three straight games, 9-5, 9-1, 9-3.
Next on was Stuart Cox of Tavistock playing at number 4 against Mike Brightwell. Stuart was in good form leading up to this match and maintained this form taking the game 9-4, 9-5, 9-5.
Next up was Colin Grice of Tavistock against Mike of Westcountry. Colin found easy pickings against a player normally playing at number 5, taking the game 9-1, 9-5, 9-3 and ensuring the match for Tavistock.
Next up was Steve Tripp at No1 against Darren Critten of Westcountry. This match was a little closer than the previous three but Steve took a two-game lead 9-2, 9-1. The scoreline caused Steve to lose concentration in the third to which Darren fought back and took 9-3.
The fourth game was close but Steve battled out and took it 9-7 to win the tie three games to one and give Tavistock a four ties to nil lead with one to play.
Finally it was Andy Gauler playing No 2 against Grant of westcountry. Grant took the first game 9-7 after a number of unforced errors by Andy. Andy battled back in the second game and took it 9-3 to level the match. But the gamesmanship continued from both sides with Grant taking the next two games and the match 3-1.
Tavistock were outright winners taking the match four ties to one, giving a positive close to the first half of the season.
