TAVISTOCK College is celebrating one of its best sets of A-Level results in recent years with a record number of A* and A grades across a range of subjects.

Sixth form students performed exceptionally well in both academic and vocational courses. Most have met or exceeded their offers from their chosen universities across the UK.

Top performing students this year included Lauren Emony who exceeded her offer from Imperial College, London to read biochemistry with 3A*s in mathematics, chemistry and biology.

Jack Morewood also exceeded his offer from Exeter University to study mathematics by gaining three A* grades in mathematics, English and business studies along with an A grade in geography and an A grade in the extended project qualification.

Jack said he worked really hard but was still surprised by his result: ‘I was not expecting it. I worked as hard as I could but you just don’t know if you have done enough. I would like to say thanks to Tesco in Tavistock where I have been working and who have helped and supported me through my studies.’

The top performing vocational student was Jennifer Sabine who now will continue her studies at the University of St Mark and St John (Marjon) in physical education. She gained distinction* grades in double award sport and in science.

Two students will go to Oxford and Cambridge universities. Having gained an A* grade in mathematics and two A grades in history and Spanish, Freya Chambers will read classics at Oxford’s Corpus Christi College. Head girl Katya Church will now read history of art at Cambridge University’s Downing College with three A* grades in English literature, psychology and fine art and a B grade in history.

Katya said she was ‘over the moon’ and hoped that one day she may work in the art sector, possibly in galleries: ‘This has been my favourite time at school — there has been such a positive atmosphere. Everybody really worked hard and I found it very supportive. I think everyone was motivated to work hard. I am really going to miss teachers and lessons at Tavistock College.’

Other notable results were gained by Joe Jordan with an A* grade in physics, and two A grades in mathematics and history; Millie Kelly who gained an A* in psychology and two A grades in textiles and in history; Joe Edwards gained an A* in psychology and two A grades in history and law; Bethany Elder gained two A* grades in biology and geography and a B in chemistry; Isaac Hammond gained three A grades in law, business studies and history and Victoria Richards gained three A grades in mathematics, biology and sociology.

Twin sisters Amy and Katy Crocker were celebrating, both results exceeding their expectations. Amy achieved an A in geography and two Bs in history and performance studies and is going to study primary education at Marjon. Katy got three As in geography, history and biology and is off to Exeter University to study radiography. The sisters said they were so proud of each other.

Sam George will be studying physics at Exeter University after achieving A*, A and B in maths, physics and further maths respectively. Sam said it had been a nervous wait but was so relieved now he had got his results. He praised the teachers who he said ‘got me through’.

Jasmine Rice will be studying fine art at Northbrook College near Brighton after achieving a B in art, B in history and C in law: ‘It’s everything I wanted — I was expecting to do really bad but it went really well.’

Sarah Jones, Principal at Tavistock College said: ‘The grades gained this year are a reflection of the hard work and commitment shown by the students. I am immensely proud of them all. It was not an easy journey for some, but the results speak for themselves.

‘Year 13 were a credit to their college and the teachers are delighted with the outcomes from such a wonderful group of students. We all wish our students the best of luck for a successful future in whatever they choose to do.’
