A TAVISTOCK group has received a grant of more than £9,000 in the Awards for All programme.
Tavistock Tall Ships is one of 57 groups across the South West to have been awarded a substantial amount in the latest round of awards, announced last week.
A total of £9,220 was given to the group and will be used to continue funding and equipment in order for school children to experience a voyage on a tall ship.
When on a tall ship challenge all participants must carry their own weight on board, in order to make them work as a team.
They all learn how to set the sails, scrub the decks, handle the ropes, take the helm, keep a lookout and be involved in all the varied tasks, which keep a tall ship sailing.
Sarah Jones, secretary of Tavistock Tall Ships, said that herself, John Collacott, the group's chairman, and the committee were delighted on hearing the news.
'We support young people so they can go on these trips as it is a good personality and character building exercise.
'We are absolutely delighted with getting the grant — we have worked really hard to get this.
'We look forward to helping loads more youngsters in the future with the help of this grant.'
She expressed thanks on behalf of the group to David Turner from Tavistock College.
