ORGANISERS of Devon's biggest cycle ride of 2009 are appealing to those who have made a New Year resolution to have a healthier lifestyle to join in their 'Pedal for a Medal'.
They say that with six months to go before the annual Dartmoor Classic, there is plenty of time for occasional bike riders to transform themselves into regular leisure cyclists.
The event, on Sunday, June 28, is cycling's equivalent to the London Marathon, where casual runners line up alongside dedicated athletes.
The Dartmoor Classic is again attracting interest from a wide range of ages and abilities from all over the country, and the Mid-Devon Cycling Club, which is organising the event, is this year planning to cater for 1,500 participants.
Club chairman Andy Parker said: 'Before Christmas we had already received more than 500 entries and are now forecasting another sell out well before the big day.
'But, at the moment, 225 places in the 100 kilometre version of the event have been reserved for Devon residents who only occasionally ride short distance.'
First introduced to the event two years ago, the concept of encouraging locals to get fit was promoted by Devon County Council TravelWise, whose brief is to promote sustainable forms of transport.
Mr Parker said: 'For this group of cycle sport debutantes, the Dartmoor Classic is a significant challenge. They have to prepare properly to complete the challenging ride through the National Park, where it is a major achievement simply to cover the distance.
'And, although it's not a race, everyone is individually timed so they can compare their performance against the elite riders.'
There is also a Dartmoor Classic's 100 mile route, which is a big attraction for seasoned endurance riders.
Entries should be in before March 31; the closing date for the reserved places.
The event starts from Kingsteignton's Abbrook Park Sports and Social Club where the 'Depart Village' will play host to a number of trade stands and other cycling exhibitors.
