TAVISTOCK Athletic Club members took part in the Beacon Challenge — an eight mile race and for most runners, it was probably the sunniest of the summer.
The course started in Ivybridge on tarmac but changes to bridleways, tracks and paths as it winds its way slowly up to the highest point of Western Beacon. Here there are beautiful views over Dartmoor and the South Hams for those with the breath to take them in.
Seven members took part and the challenge was a new race for all TAC members, with the exception of Pete Bazeley who was running it for the fourth successive year. Pete cut a huge 12 minutes off his last year's time to finish third in his age group. Also third in his group was Chris Eastaugh, who finished in tenth place overall. Rob Kirby finished 25th, coming fifth in the same group but Tony Shearer was the TAC male prizewinner, continuing his great form to win his age category.
Tavistock ladies also had excellent races, with Sue Bratchley and Nicole Heryet both winning their age-group races. Sue's daughter, Sam, aged 17 and running only her third race, gained third place in her group and younger sister Claire, 13, was first female home in the fun-run. Both girls are very promising runners.
Times: Chris Eastaugh 1hour; Rob Kirby 1hr 9mins 23secs; Pete Bazeley 1.9.31; Sam Frazer 1.11.34; Sue Bratchley 1.12.20; Nicole Heryet 1.15.47; Tony Shearer 1.16.58.
