Tavistock Athletic Club's 'Athlete of the Month' is Lorraine Tofield.

Lorraine has been running for the last nine years or so, starting when her son, Adam (now TAC's head junior coach) was a junior member. Lorraine would turn up early to register the young runners, and then wait until the session was over.

Rather than sitting around, a few mums decided to go for a weekly run around the park whilst they were waiting.

Around the same time, the club started a beginners group, which Lorraine joined. She took a fitness in running and walking qualification in 2004 and from this point on, Lorraine has coached Kelly group.

She said: 'Not being a natural runner, and not being remotely interested at school, I find it rewarding to encourage others – If I can do it, anyone can!

'I get a buzz from others enjoying their run in a sociable setting, enjoying our beautiful Dartmoor countryside and without pressure of pace.

'Individuals put in effort as and when they feel able, moving up to faster groups as they gain fitness but always being able to return if they want a sociable run.'

Last year, Lorraine went on to become a UK Athletics level 2 coach.

She works hard at her own fitness and continues to be a much-valued and popular member of the clubs' coaching team.
