NEW swings could be in place in Okehampton's Simmons Park within a month following a decision by town councillors to replace them.
The children's swings had to be removed from the park, upsetting parents and toddlers, because they were condemned during an inspection of play equipment.
The town council is now bound by health and safety legislation to replace or repair if possible anything from the play area which is considered dangerous by inspectors.
The roundabout is considered beyond repair and at a meeting of the council's parks committee this week it was decided not to replace it because the cost of £2,600 was too high.
But the swings will be replaced at a cost of £1,138 and £700 will see the seesaw repaired.
Town clerk John Winchester said without a doubt the swings were the most popular item in the park and the council had received several complaints about their disappearance.
'It will take a short period of time to put an order in and get the work done but hopefully in three or four weeks there will be kiddies swings in the park again,' he said.
