A SHEEP dog will be the unusual visitor to Okehampton Library next week, when she comes to meet her fans. Swift will be accompanying Devon sheep farmer David Kennard, whose books and films about his life and his working dogs have been a runaway success. David, who lives near Holsworthy, maintains two flocks of 850 ewes, as well as another farm of 260 acres. Swift featured in the documentary film about David's sheepdogs, 'The Year of the Working Sheepdog', which was released in 2000, when David was seeking new means of diversification on the farm. She was also the star of his two books, 'A Shepherd's Watch' and 'The Dogs of Windcutter Down'. The old girl is now retired, but still accompanies David on all his speaking engagements. David's most recent project was a pilot film about Mist, his new sheepdog puppy, which was featured on Channel 5 at Christmas with voiceovers by Derek Jacobi, Una Stubbs and Brian Blessed. The programme had the highest viewing figures of the day and is being made into a regular series starting this month. Apart from devising the story and characters for the 'Mist' film and working the dogs and other animals featured in it, David, who has been a shepherd since he left school aged 17, was responsible for most of the camera work. He said: 'When I started filming Mist, I didn't realise what a huge weight of expectation I was putting on the shoulders of one tiny puppy. 'They say never work with children and animals, but all the dogs have been great throughout the whole two years of filming.' David and Swift will be at Okehampton Library next Wednesday at 2pm. Tickets are £2.50 from the library on 01837 52805 and will include refreshments. The regular series of Mist starts on Channel 5 on April 14.
