APPRECIATING that different departments, groups and quangos dish out their allocated funds in different ways, is it not a truly sad state of affairs that the front page of the Okehampton Times, January 18, highlights one of the real tragedies of today's Britain?

The upper article describes the fantastic efforts being made by Dr Nielson, Mr Edmonds and their supporters in having to beg for £250,000 for the new hospital.

In the lower article, the mayor is urging members to grab £300,000 before they lose it so that they may pretty up West Street and Fore Street. To what end? Further playthings for the vandals? More distractions for the motorist?

In an ideal world maybe both could be achieved, but surely the priority must be a hospital for Okehampton worthy of the 21st century.

Elected, and unelected, representatives of the town and surrounding area should possibly think what their priorities are.
