A far-reaching document which maps out the future development of West Devon up to 2026 has won overwhelming support from the key organisations in the borough, says West Devon Borough Council.

The West Devon Core Strategy sets out a long-term vision for the future pattern of development across the borough, and includes a range of strategic objectives and policies to guide decisions on planning applications.

West Devon's Local Strategic Partnership, which brings together public, private, voluntary and community sectors in the borough, has given the strategy the green light. The partnership includes organisations such as Dartmoor National Park Authority, Devon Primary Care Trust, Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon County Council, and representatives from community groups.

The partnership says that the core strategy will play a vital role in delivering much needed improvements to services and infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and transport, as well as delivering housing and jobs to meet the needs of local people.

West Devon's future planning and housing committee met earlier this week to consider the core strategy and has recommended that it should be adopted by the council who meet later this month to discuss the issue.

Cllr James McInnes, chairman of the LSP, said it was important that councillors gave their support to the strategy.

'The organisations who make up the Local Strategic Partnership have all worked very closely with the council to develop this plan. Councillors appreciate that West Devon's future is in their hands and the LSP believes this is the right plan to meet the needs of our communities up until 2026.'
