A MAGNIFICENT sundial to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee will be unveiled at Roadford Lake Country Park.
On behalf of the people of Devon, Lord-Lieutenant Eric Dancer will oversee the unveiling ceremony at noon on Friday, August 17, which will include a blessing from the Bishop of Plymouth.
Lord-Lieutenant Dancer said: 'This sundial marks Devon's support and loyalty to Her Majesty the Queen.
'All those who will visit this site from across the world, now and in the future, will be reminded of Her Majesty's 60 years of dedication and commitment to extraordinary public service and this fine country's acknowledgement of that selfless service.'
The choice of a sundial followed consideration by a working party led by Vice Lord-Lieutenant Sir John Cave and comprising fellow deputy lieutenants Robin Barlow, Anthony Mildmay-White, Rachel Thomas, Steve Hindley and Ric Cheadle. They were advised from the outset of the project in August 2012 by sundial designer Ben Jones.
Sir John said: 'A huge amount of thought went into this. For the golden jubilee, we presented Her Majesty with an orchard of Devon apple trees which was planted at Sandringham. For the Diamond Jubilee we wanted to create something very striking that people could visit and that showcases the skills of Devon-based companies and using some natural Devon materials.
'We are very grateful to South West Lakes Trust which has been hugely supportive in agreeing to accommodate the sundial.
'Roadford Lake Country Park was chosen as a striking backdrop for such a unique piece. It is a major tourist attraction and although moderately remote, is easily accessible to all and will bring more people to a new attraction in the county.'
