TUG-OF-WAR, brightly coloured pantomime horses, jazz and fireworks combined to provide fun for all the family at the Day at the Races held in Tavistock on Sunday.
The event, organised by Tavistock Lions and Tavistock Round Table at Tavistock College, is usually a backdrop for the annual balloon fiesta.
Unfortunately, this had to be cancelled due to foot and mouth restrictions, but the crowds still enjoyed an afternoon of fun and entertainment.
Steve Grummitt, Lions spokesman, said: 'We wanted to put something on for people as there were no balloons. It's such a shame because it was a perfect weekend and they probably would have flown every slot.
'However, we're now starting planning for next year's event which will hopefully be bigger and better.'
Just one balloon did attend the event, brought by Geoff Davis, courtesy of The Leasing Group. This was inflated and tethered in the College grounds.
Music on the day was provided by Cats Whisker and proved 'very popular', said Steve.
Five teams took part in the Far West Tug-of-War Championships — even this event has been affected by foot and mouth as many of the teams included members from the farming community.
The teams from Fellton, near Bristol, swept the board in the championship, winning all four categories.
Devon Fire and Rescue Service performed a variety of rescue exhibitions, using cutting equipment, before setting fire to a car and roaring onto the College field to extinguish it.
The day was rounded off with a fireworks spectacular.
