THE season starts to draw to the end ? a very successful season for Tavistock Golf Club.
The club championship took place on November 13 between James Ruth and Alan Gawman. The two were meeting for the third consecutive year. As usual there was excellent golf and after being runner-up for the last two years, Alan won his third championship beating James 2 and 1.
The club team of James, Alan and Graham Ruth, reserves Duncan File and Andy Coe, flew to Glyfada near Athens to represent England in the European Team Championship.
On the first day in very difficult conditions the team lay in second place. Although the second day saw conditions ease, the team did not fare quite as well.
Unfortunately, illness struck James, Duncan and Andy after a visit to a local restaurant, they were too ill even to make it as far as the course itself.
Alan and Graham did their best given the circumstances and eventually finished in sixth place, the best of all four home nations.
On a sad note, the club lost one of its most notable members with the death of club president, Albert Rowse at the age of 95. Captain in 1959 and president since 1973, he was still very active and involved in the club right up to his death. He will be missed not only by many friends but by the club itself.
The greenkeepers stableford on October 16 was won by Matt Hulbert on countback from Richard Jasper with 41 points each.
The midweek stableford on October 20 by Andy Coe with an excellent score of 44 points from junior organiser Phil Gawman with 41. The Foster Ferris trophy on October 30 was won by George and Nicky Gawman on 65 from Roger Rich and Max Clarke and Rick Harrison and David Young with 66s. The Moorland Links trophy on November 6 was won by Rod Williams (net 62) from Joe Creber and Nigel Timpson (net 66s).
The Basil Steer trophy was played in difficult conditions, ensuring the winner would have to play good golf. Peter Leverton was the winner of the best net prize with a net 71, but the winner of the Basil Steer trophy was James Ruth who scored a gross 71.
November 10 saw the annual match between the captain and secretary. In good weather the captain?s team won 8-5.
The Turkey Trott on November 14 was well supported with more than 100 taking part. Rod Williams scored a net 67, but the best scores were the net 66s of Martin Channon and Max Clarke.
The following were also recipients of vouchers, Graham Ruth, Rick Harrison, Dave Burge, Monty Congdon, Graham Dennis, Tony Cooper, David Lobb, M Becker, Bernard Green, Adam Burbidge, A Robb and R Short.
