Devon & Exeter League Premier division
Okehampton Argyle 4
Exeter University 1
OKEHAMPTON completed their league programme with a comfortable win, but the game was closer than the scoreline suggests.
Argyle got off to a flying start when Paul Yip tricked his marker in the fifth minute and his pinpoint cross was side-footed home by Steve Williams.
University should have levelled the scores from their next attack, but their striker shot over the bar from six yards.
This miss was to prove costly, because a neat move by Argyle saw Daniel Gibbs break through the centre and score with a low drive that went in off the post.
Play remained fairly even until seconds before half-time, when Adam Mortimer for Argyle pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area and found the corner of the net with a well placed shot.
University put Argyle under pressure at the start of the second half by scoring from a free kick in the 50th minute. The first shot was blocked, but the rebound was tucked away in the corner.
The students should have reduced the arrears further on the hour when they were awarded a penalty for a foul. But Argyle?s keeper, Chris Dearing, pulled off a great one-handed save to give the home side a bit of breathing space.
University knew it was not to be their day when, from their next attack, they clipped the crossbar ? from that point Argyle regained control.
Mortimer lost a golden opportunity for Argyle when he missed from three yards from a Robbie Miller pass.
But in injury time he made up for it by scoring Argyle?s fourth to give the home side a victory and a comfortable mid-table position in the league.
