PROBLEM solving and team building at HMS Raleigh were enjoyed by a group of 30 Tavistock College pupils recently.

College PE teacher Leigh Underhay took the group to the Army Schools Challenge Trophy at the naval training establishment, where they competed as Tavistock College A, B and C teams.

The event should originally have taken place over two days, with sixth formers on one day and year 10 on another. Unfortunately, due to the weather, the first day was cancelled, so the remaining day saw both age groups competing against one another. The college's A team consisted of mixed sixth form, B of year 10 boys and C of year 10 girls.

The ten 'Krypton Factor' type events included an assault course, a bleep fitness test, a communication task, a prison camp escape exercise and three competitions in the swimming pool.

The 'A' team came an impressive joint fourth with the 'B' team not far behind in sixth position. The girls' team came fourteenth, but as a large number of the teams were two years older, Mr Underhay said theirs was still a very creditable performance.

In addition to this success, Simon Callender from the 'B' team was awarded the Best Effort prize for his contribution to the day.
