A SPLENDID new play area was unveiled in Tavistock Primary School this week amid accolades for its 17-year-old creators.
Tavistock College students Joe Langman, James McLaughlin, Clayton Mitchelmore and Simon Maddock designed and built the children's play equipment as part of their A-level design and technology project.
The students said: 'The primary school approached the college to ask if anyone would be interested in taking on the project and we volunteered.
'It was a group undertaking but we have each designed our own pieces of equipment and executed our part of the design.'
The five play pieces are a set of monkey bars in an enclosed area with bark chipping floor, a slide which comes out from the mouth of a roaring lion, a moving bridge, a giant spider's web to climb on and a set of rope swings.
Staff at the school said the youngsters had put a great deal of hard work and dedication into the scheme, and they were thrilled with the results.
Headteacher Joe Flynn said: 'We are really delighted with the equipment and cannot speak highly enough of the four boys.
'They have created five large and otherwise very expensive pieces of play equipment with great skill.
'They spent a great deal of time researching the health and safety and British standard aspects of the design and everyone here is extremely pleased with the results.
'The playground has been transformed from tarmac desert to an interesting and stimulating place to play — the children can't wait until after half-term when they can use the play areas.'
The students expressed thanks to everyone who helped them with the project, especially IGM Construction for their assistance with installation and digging, PD Drilling, Brandon Tool Hire and particularly family and friends who gave up their free time to help.
