FARMERS in West Devon will be heartened to hear of a new campaign to recognise their hard work and highlight their unique contribution to British life.

Six students from the University of Plymouth have launched 'Thanks to Farmers' — a national initiative encouraging the public to think about the benefits of buying local produce and profile the dedication of farmers, whom they hail as 'unsung heroes' in society.

Rufus Denne, team leader and who hails from a farming family, said: 'What started out as part of an enterprise challenge has turned into a fully-fledged and passionate project, where there is a desire to give back to the nation's farmers, who have given us so much for so many years.

'We are dedicated to raising awareness of British farmers who work long hours, in harsh conditions to provide the most vital resource of all — food. We ask you to get involved with our campaign and spread its reach, so the country can give our irreplaceable farmers the recognition they truly deserve.'

The six students, who are all in their final year at Plymouth University, have entered a national enterprise challenge in the hope of generating greater appreciation of British farmers.

The initiative is part of the 'National Rise To Challenge' helping students gain real-life skills to equip them for the world of work. Teams bid to gain the highest number of online 'thanks' messages as part of their campaign.

They felt farming was the perfect cause, with the industry particularly prominent in this part of the world with 1,584 dairy and 2,801 beef holdings in Devon alone.

Marketing degree student Sophie Chaffe, 21, whose family come from Tavistock, said the campaign was not just a great cause but a good way for the team to show potential employers what they can offer.

She told the Times: 'I wanted to get involved with an enterprise project like this as it is becoming increasingly difficult to secure a good job after university. The level of competition is higher and employers are now expecting more evidence of experience, as well as just a degree. Also several companies are tracking the teams in this competition and will be offering work experience and employment opportunities to a select few.

'It's also a really fun project and a chance for me to work with my friends as well.'
