BUOYED by victory in their first league match in division 1,TavistockSquash Club travelled to play the university students with the hope that age and experience could overcome youth and naivety. Unfortunately, no one had told that to the students and a lesson in conservative squash was metered out to Tavistock. First to try his luck was Pete Walshe, who attempted to use all his guile and trickery but Matt was having none of it and replied in kind on the odd occasion. Traffic was all one-way and Pete was soon wanting to return to his division 3 side. Dave Ruffell had requested some tougher games than he got at no 5 in division 2 last year and he was not to be disappointed. While he battled hard and played some good squash this was a leap too far up the rankings to make much impression on his opponent. Dave?s game has plenty of opportunity to improve and a few more games at this level should see him compete much better. Pete Middleton started well with some hard fought rallies that could have gone either way, but invariably went to Olly . Pete continued to push his opponent but by the third game he came away with the same handful of points as the others . Even Andy Gauler was subdued, but came back in the second to lead 7-1. It looked like he might score Tavistock?s first point of the night but his young opponent moved up a gear to record a straight 3-0 win. With all hopes for a point resting on the captain Steve Tripp had an encouraging start with some close rallies but again was outclassed. Tavistock will learn a lot from playing at this level and will surely get more points from ensuing games ? if there are any top players looking for a match please get in touch with Steve Tripp at Tavistock Squash Club
