TAVISTOCK College sports students held their own press conference with the Plymouth Raiders basketball team as part of a new leadership qualification.
Teacher Shaun Hulbert took 33 students studying for the Sports Leaders UK level one award in sports leadership to the Plymouth Raiders basketball experience to help them learn how events are run.
Mr Hulbert said: 'This is a nationally recognised qualification which not only helps in future sporting careers, but is also recognised by employers in many industries. The course looks at developing valuable abilities such as organising, managing and communicating to others.'
Mr Hulbert said the Plymouth Raiders trip not only allowed the students to experience the atmosphere of a live sporting occasion, but also to see what was involved in running the whole event. The students were given a tour of Plymouth Pavilions and observed the promotions department welcoming and accommodating the officials, players and supporters before the match.
Mr Hulbert added: 'We then got to enjoy the game which unfortunately the Raiders lost 75-79 to Essex Pirates. After the post match photos and autographs from the players and mascot Foxy, the students got to hold their own press conference and interview coach Gary Stronach and player Anthony Rowe.
'The highlights for the students were the fireworks and fantastic entertainment which the event provided, the Raiders' mascot Foxy and the superb questions put to the Raiders coach at the post match Tavistock College press conference.
'This was a fantastic trip and many thanks to the Plymouth Raiders for their hospitality.'
The Sports Leaders from Tavistock College will now take this experience into the classroom and run their own sporting events for other students.
