OKEHAMPTON College students were hoping their opinions on the environment did not go to waste when they took part in a special ?waste summit? in Exeter on Friday. The students joined with secondary pupils from eight other Devon schools who went to County Hall in Exeter for the fifth ?Don?t let Devon go to waste summit?. They were asked their ideas to tackle the issues surrounding waste in the county. Students were set the pre-summit task of discussing ?how they could personally reduce the amount of waste they produce? and they will get the chance to put forward their viewpoint as part of a summit-style debate. They were also given group tasks to examine packaging, how to lead a more sustainable lifestyle and even produce a radio advert to promote recycling to Devon residents. Cllr Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council?s executive member for the environment, launched the event. She said: ?This event equips young people with the knowledge so they can make informed choices when purchasing items, from clothing to food, as well as making general lifestyle decisions, without preaching to them. ?We want to promote the value of changing our behaviour and the positive effect this will have on our beautiful county.?
