Devon 2 League North Tawton 41 Torpoint/St Columba 8 NORTH Tawton put on a convincing display of running rugby to earn some much-needed league points. Within two minutes, Tawton flanker Alfie May took a short feed from a lineout and sprinted in under the posts for the first try, which went unconverted. Torpoint/St Columba took the next score, with North Tawton conceding a penalty and an extra ten metres to bring the visiting hooker into range for a converted penalty kick. Soon after the restart a hook against the head by North Tawton set winger Ryan King free down the left side, but the break was stopped and Torpoint countered with a good mauling drive. The Tawton pack set up the next score as flanker Richard Nye broke from a maul near the halfway line and popped a neat pass to fellow back-row player Alfie May, who came in on the burst. His strength took him through defensive tackles to score his second try under the posts. The conversion by David Fewings took North Tawton to 12-3 after 20 minutes. North Tawton ran in two more tries before half time. The first started from a determined follow-up tackle by scrum half Martin Friggens. The resulting maul produced ball for the three-quarters and right wing Zac Matravers broke down the touchline. He passed to centre Phil Elkins, who went over for a try? which was converted by Fewings. The second came when a quick tap penalty was taken by David Fewings, and he wriggled through the defenders to put the ball down. He converted his own try to lift the score to 26-3 for Tawton at the interval. The second half saw the home side start well with a penalty kick converted by fly-half Matt Weekes. Torpoint responded well when they drove through for their first try, which went unconverted. Torpoint were unable to clear their lines effectively and a loose kick was gathered in by Tawton number eight Stephen King close to the try line. He laid off the ball to captain Andy Pyle in close support, who dived over for a try. The score was not converted. The last try came from another charging break by Alfie May who was almost through for his hat-trick but was held up about ten metres out. He offloaded to Zac Matravers who jinked through to touch down, giving Matt Weekes an easy final conversion to leave the final score at 41-8 to North Tawton.
