PEOPLE in Okehampton are being helped to stop smoking through a confidential, one-to-one clinic run by NHS Devon.

The support clinic, which will be run by a stop smoking advisor, will offer tips and guidance on how to quit the habit.

Health improvement specialist for NHS Devon, Greg Price, said: 'We get good feedback from people attending our clinics. The support is free and we can organise a prescription for nicotine replacement therapies such as patches and gum.'

Mr Price said smokers are up to four times more likely to stop smoking if they get support from their local NHS Stop Smoking Service, rather than relying on willpower alone. 'People who smoke have individual habits and so each client at our stop smoking service gets a tailored approach to maximise the likelihood of success. For those who have tried to give up several times and perhaps feel that nothing will work, we may have the solution.'

Mr Price said the service will help people financially too as figures show that a 20 a day smoker could save around £2,000 per year if they quit. Specialist advisors will be on hand to help find the best method to help clients.
