ENOUGH has already been written about wind turbines but, suffice to say, I am sure they can be made cost-effective provided the subsidy is big enough. Mind you the same could be said about pineapple farming on Dartmoor. On balance I think I prefer the pineapple farming. It would certainly be far less intrusive and probably less expensive. But seriously, we live in one of the most unspoilt, wild and beautiful parts of southern England. We have paid out millions in subsidies over the past 40 years to protect this environment for the enjoyment of all. To destroy it forever by the construction of these hopelessly uneconomic monstrosities which can only make a negligible and inconsistent contribution to our energy needs is the utmost folly. Cornwall has been desecrated, Bradworthy spoiled and we are seriously considering doing the same to West Devon. No enquiries, no consultations, no offers of bribes and compensation. Stop it and stop it now! Richard Leonard Menfreya Thorndon Cross
