Tavistock A 4 Penzance B 0 ANOTHER strong performance by the Tavistock A team saw them retain their lead at the top of the Gerrard Hockey league?s South Western District 1. A positive start saw Tavistock enjoying most of the possession with good open play between forwards, midfield and backs. Penzance fielded a fit young side with an experienced defence and it took the home side fifteen minutes to finally break their resistance and allow Nick Aveyard to dribble past two defenders and score Tavistock?s first. After continued pressure from the home side a penalty corner was awarded following an infringement in the opposition D. Kevin Lethbridge converted this chance with a terrific strike to beat the Penzance keeper, who had until then been stopping countless shots on goal. The second half continued with Tavistock keeping up the pressure and Penzance defending. However the visitors did start to make a few runs forward, which each time were stopped by the solid defence of Bob Cowan, Kev Lethbridge and Nick Bradley. This left the Tavistock keeper with very few saves to make. A typically opportunistic Nick Andrews goal from six feet out made it three nil, and enabled Tavistock to push the ball around and enjoy the last fifteen minutes. A superb aerial goal from second team debutant James Hawken put the game well beyond Penzance, and brought the goal tally for the first six games of the season to 42.
