EACH year, Hurdwick golf Club holds a 37 hole medal competition, spread over two days and the 2005 event took place last weekend. There are two separate medals and then a combined event scored over the two days. There were some excellent scores. Division One winner was Martin Stevens with a net 67. He was followed by Ernie Trimble with 69 and Chris Dicker with a net 70. The outstanding result of the day came in Division Two, where Steve Howells shot an excellent net 58. Second was Tom Backaller on countback from Clive Edmunds, both with 67. The leading lady was Sally Arscott with a 74 and Jason Archer and Steve Howells won the ?Twos? sweep. Sunday produced more good scores and it was the turn of Division One to produce the score of the day. Here Roger Downing led the field with an outstanding net 63. Ernie Trimble again took second place with 70 and Roger Backaller was third with 72. In Division Two, new member Tony Wood was the winner with a net 66. Steve Howells and Clive Edmunds produced further good rounds, each with 70, to take second and third positions. The leading lady was Alena Wardle. The main prizes were won with combined scores over the two days and here Steve Howells won the Crystal Decanter and Alena Wardle the Crystal Bowl. Roger Downing was the second placed man with Ernie Trimble and Clive Edmunds tied in third place. The golf was followed by a barbecue and the Hurdwick Hundred Draw. The June Midweek Stableford was also won by Steve Howells with 41 points, with Phil Bryant in second with 38 points and Chris Dicker third with 36. Another important competition in June is the Past Captains? Stableford followed by a dinner, which is organised by the current captain, John Rea. One past captain, Roger Gallimore, came from Cyprus to play in this event but was not rewarded for his efforts as the winner, by a large margin, was Rodney Browne with 42 points.
