ONE of only two Robey tritandem steam rollers is on course to puff around Tavistock for the annual Robey Trust Tavistock Steam Fair on Sunday, June 1.

The tritandem roller is looked after by the Robey Trust at their works in the town, and has recently had new boilers fitted ? a job that proved rather awkward and time consuming.

There was doubt over whether the work could be completed in time for the fair, but the hard toil of father and son team Alfie and William Friend has ensured the unique engine will be on show again this year.

The tritandem engine was specifically designed for rolling runways and one of its last commercial duties was flattening the original section of the M1 motorway.

John Turner, organiser of the steam fair, said he was delighted the magnificent machine would play a part in this year?s event and was indebted to the hard graft of Alfie and William.

He also praised the organising committee, which has gathered together all the steam engines, cars, lorries, tractors, models and collectables that make up the show.

He said: ?It takes a lot of letter writing and phone calls to get this off the ground and it?s all done voluntarily.

The Robey Trust is always ready to welcome people to help run the steam fair, particularly on the day. Anybody wishing to help out with selling ride tickets, entrance tickets or be part of the stewarding team, can give John Turner a ring on 01822 612633.

The steam fair opens at 11am and winds up at 6pm.
