WARD and Chowen, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, held the fifth annual show and sale of mule ewe lambs as well as a sale of mule ewes this month. 920 ewe lambs and 250 2T ewes were forward, meeting a steady trade throughout. The show was judged by R Palmer from Mortonhampstead with excellent sponsored prizes from Dectomex, Cornwall Farmers (Tavistock), Maunder and Sons (Launceston), Wessex Animal Health and Antony Wallis ATVs. Champion pen was won by K C and J C Heard, Okehampton, with their pen of lambs bred out of Scotch Blackface ewes which later sold for £57 for a pen of 10. Reserve champion pen went to N H and M J Cole, Yelverton, again bred out of Scotch Blackface Ewes which realised £46. Third prize went to P L Heard, Okehampton, for his pen of Swaledale bred lambs which realised top price of the day at £60. Fourth prize was awarded to L C Branfield from Princetown. A strong contingent of buyers were present and the new sale ring bought with a donation from Wessex Animal Health worked very well. The ewe lambs averaged £39.65, only 51p down on the previous year. The 2T Mule ewes topped at £68.50 for a pen from J J Goodenough, Davidstow. All the 250 Ewes forward were sold to an average of £53.79 being £3.26 down on the previous year. The show of Scotch Blackface females was judged by W P Dean with prizes donated by Dectomax and Mole Avon Trading (Okehampton). The show was won for the second year running by K J Watson, Postbridge for his pen of Ewe Lambs that later realised £34 for a pen of 10. Reserve champion went to M J Malseed, Frenchbeer Farm Limited, Chagford, for his pen of 2T ewes that later realised £36 for a pen of 10, which was also top price ewes overall.Top price lambs were £37 for a pen from S G Palmer and Sons, Peter Tavy. Older Scotch Blackface ewes were sold for £27 for a pen of full mouth ewes again from M J Malseed. An entry of 55 4T Swaledale ewes for G Goddard, Yelverton, sold to £40 for a pen of 25.
