GIFTED and talented students at Tavistock College recently visited the Eden Project to be part of the BBC Stargazing Live series of programmes.

Twenty two year 7 students attended the event, having previously spent a session with local astronomer Clive Purchase learning the basics of GCSE Astronomy.

The evening was unfortunately very foggy and no stars or planets could be seen by the many large and professional telescopes positioned at the Eden Project. However the BBC had staged an informative and entertaining evening for all who went.

Students were able to make and fire rockets, learn about telescopes, guide a moon buggy by remote control — the buggy was actually on the Shetland Isles but was guided by TV monitors — attend talks, visit the end of the universe in the planetarium and seek for aliens in the biomes.

The year seven students will now visit Exeter University's Physics department and will also use telescopes to view the stars and planets during a sleep-over to be held at the college.
