ST PETER'S Church in North Tawton is planning a photographic history of weddings and wants to hear from couples who were married there.

Parochial Church Council member Janice Phillips suggested the idea because she said the church was not just a place but 'all about people.'

'I think it is sad that we have no photographs of couples who marry in the church yet everyone else involved in the wedding does,' she said.

'We have a written record of marriages but pictures and stories bring the whole thing alive.'

From now on, couples who book the church for a wedding will be asked if they can supply a photo for the church to keep, but all those 'old married couples' with albums gracing the attics are the ones currently in demand.

If you were married in the church recently or long ago, Janice and her team would be delighted if you could supply a photo that will be copied and returned to you.

With each photo, they would like the date of the marriage, names of bride and groom and the officiating clergymen and any notes of interest.

Janice said the photographic record would be on display in the church but it would also be taken to events like the drop-in morning at the Town Hall where it would create great interest.

'We already have photos coming in from early in the 20th century,' she said. 'Very often there is a story to tell which is funny or reveals something about North Tawton's history, for example, in the past couples used to marry early in the day in order to catch the only train from the town to go on honeymoon.

'The church is all about people and we want to make sure people are not forgotten.'
