CHARITY Westden will this Saturday (December 3) be urging people to do their bit locally to help combat climate change. Westden will be inviting people to visit a yurt on Tavistock?s Bedford Square where they can find out more about reducing carbon emissions, enter a competition, and sample free locally-produced food. Visitors to the yurt will have the chance to make a ?greener lifestyle pledge? and enter a competition to win a locally-made Christmas pudding or a wind-up radio. There will also be a chance for children to play with toys and devices powered by renewable energy. The Devon Energy Efficiency Advice Centre will be handing out free low energy light bulbs in return for a pledge on energy saving and free tasters will be on offer from local food initiative ?Food Dreckly?. Westden?s Communities in Action project will also be on hand to encourage people to join a car-share group to help cut carbon dioxide emissions caused by car journeys and there will be advice about composting, waste reduction and recycling. Geri Laithwaite, of Westden, said: ?Devon County Council already runs a comprehensive internet carshare site. We want to complement this scheme on a local level by helping potential carsharers to meet in a social setting. ?Communities in Action are inviting anyone interested in either sharing their car or looking for a lift to come for a free drink and mince pie on Wednesday December 14 between 6pm and 8pm at the Parish Rooms in Tavistock. ?By sharing your car you can save hundreds of pounds a year and help do your bit for the environment.? The event on Bedford Square, which runs from 9.30am to 3pm, coincides with International Day of Climate Protest, which aims to put pressure on politicians attending the Montreal Climate talks.
