ANYONE can grow potatoes and Okehampton Farmers' Market will be promoting this as an alternative form of income for crisis-hit farmers on February 19.

People just talk about potatoes as if they are the same when in fact there are many different types,' said Derek Godfrey-Brown from the chamber of trade.

'The aim this month is to show people the different types available and how easy it is to grow potatoes.

'Any farmer can produce potatoes and it would be an alternative cash crop for them.'

He said most of the potatoes purchased in this area came from East Anglia and some crisps were made from French potatoes.

'The farmers' market is all about promoting local food and there is no reason why we cannot produce our own potatoes.'

The British Potato Council is supporting the event.
