ENJOYING the competition in the sheep section was Yelverton farmer Mathew Cole — and not without some successes.

Mathew's white faced Dartmoor sheep impressed the judges including, on the first morning, his ram taking third place in his class and his ewe hogs a fourth in the group.

He has been coming to the Devon Show since 1988 and it has come very much a family tradition, with his dad Arnold and Mathew's son Tom also competing.

The family are four generations of sheep farmers at their Greenwell Farm, Yelverton and have enjoyed successes and several champions at other farming shows in the county such as Okehampton, Chagford and Cornwood.

Mathew told the Times: 'I always looks forward to the month of May and the Devon County Show. As far as I'm concerned when the show is on its time to forget about winter because spring is definitely here!'
