THE county councils of Devon and Cornwall have joined forces with Local Councils in a bid to raise awareness of the Tamar Valley?s status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Known as the The Tamar Valley AONB Service, collaborators have organised a series of events to celebrate the spectacular sights seen in the valley throughout the summer months. Starting on Sunday May 1, local archeologist Colin Buck will be hosting a guided walk around Devon Great Consols. Beginning at 1pm, the four hour stroll will take in Wheal Anna Maria and Wheal Josiah and is expected to be extremely popular. Taking place on the same day will be a three hour trip aboard a gaff-rigged, South West sailing boat. Once a busy waterway, organisers believe that this tour of the Lynher will provide a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the glorious scenery of this now deserted tribuatary. The AONB will also be celebrating National Space Day on May 5 by inviting people from the area to experience the sky over the Tamar Valley with the facilities available at Callington?s Space Centre. Weather permitting, those who attend will be treated to views of bright stars and distant galaxies, but, in the event of cloudy skies, a virtual tour of space will be put on. There will also be the opportunity to make water rockets and solve problems on the computer so organisers are billing as a great evening for all the family. Organisers expect all the events to be very popular so advance booking is essential. Tamarsail are running the Lynher boat trip and places ? at £20 a head ? can be booked on 01752 840599. Reservations for Tony Buck?s guided tour or the Space Day at Callington Space Centre can be made on 01579 351681.
