PROPOSALS for a new junction to overcome road safety problems and congestion at the Merrymeet roundabout on the A30 at Whiddon Down are due to be made public shortly.

The Highways Agency is to distribute leaflets to residents and interested parties starting tomorrow (Friday), detailing the agency?s proposals for the new two-level junction and seeking the public?s views.

Further copies of the leaflets will be available from post offices at Whiddon Down, Sticklepath and South Zeal.

Residents are also invited to visit a public consultation exhibition due to be held at Whiddon Down Village Hall next Saturday, January 18, so they can view the proposed junction improvement and discuss the scheme with members of the project team.

David Radway, Highways Agency project sponsor, said: ?It is proposed to replace the existing roundabout with a two-level junction, providing unhindered movement for through traffic.

?Great care has been taken to identify the option that provides the best fit in the landscape and does not impact on Dartmoor National Park.

?The views of local people are important to us and we hope as many people as possible will visit the public exhibition.?

The consultation period following the exhibition will last until April 3.

The improvement proposals follow an open day held by the Highways Agency in Whiddon Down a year ago.

The works are part of a package of proposals announced by the secretary of state for transport in October last year.

Subject to the outcome of the consultation, ministers will announce details of the junction improvement this spring.

The minister of state has already indicated he is minded to adopt the proposed two-level junction unless significant new issues emerge from the consultation.

Devon County Council is also seeking views of the public and will be holding a complementary exhibition on the same day.
