A SENIOR green campaigner will be visiting Chagford next month to speak about climate change. Tony Juniper, executive director of Friends of the Earth, will be delivering a talk entitled 'Climate Change: taking action in time'. The talk has been organised by environmental charity Westden and the Devon Association for Renewable Energy (DARE) as part of work to raise awareness among people in West Devon about the challenge of climate change. The talk will be introduced by Westden director Anna Kennedy and a short film on climate change will be shown. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session and refreshments. Anna Kennedy said: 'We are very excited to have such a high profile speaker to help us publicise this urgent issue. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing our world today and it is vital that we understand the causes of the problem, how it is likely to affect us, and what we need to do urgently to help tackle it in our own lives. 'The main human cause of climate change is the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. Carbon dioxide is mainly emitted through burning coal, oil and gas for energy, electricity and transport. 'Climate change is a huge challenge for governments, businesses and individuals but can also mean a lot of new opportunities if we are willing to take action.' Tony Juniper has been an environmental campaigner for nearly twenty years, he has worked with Friends of the Earth since 1990 and played a prominent role in many of its most high-profile campaigns. Mr Juniper will be speaking at 7.30pm on Tuesday. February 20, at the Jubilee Hall, Chagford.
