TWO international sporting stars have thrown their weight behind the campaign to build an all-weather athletics track in the grounds of Tavistock College. Former England rugby union captain Phil de Glanville and Olympic silver medallist Kate Allenby, both from Tavistock, have signed up to join the Bedford Mile, the huge fun run, taking place in the town on Sunday April 1. Thousands of people are predicted to join in the event, a joint project between Tavistock Athletic Club, Tavistock College and Kelly College — organisers hope it will raise £100,000 towards the £300,000 target needed to build the track. Phil de Glanville said: 'It's a great fundraising project that the athletics club has committed to and I think by getting the community involved it will bring a lot more ownership and pride to the track. 'It's a brilliant way of bringing people together.' Kate Allenby, who won silver in the women's modern pentathlon event at the 2000 Olympics, said she was looking forward to taking part — along with her parents, husband and new baby, Megan. 'It would be superb to see a new tartan track in Tavistock — something that is long overdue,' said Kate. The Bedford Mile takes place between Bedford Square and Drake Statue. It is hoped people from all sectors of the community will join in the fun, whether they run, walk, hop or crawl the route and make it a real day to remember.
