WEST Devon youngsters struck gold at the County Youth Games on Saturday.
More than 150 young people from across the borough took part in the Devon event at Exmouth, which was opened by Olympic swimmer Nick Gillingham.
The mixed tag rugby team of youngsters aged from eight to ten years won overall and each was awarded a gold medal. The coach was Will Reed.
There was also success for the netball team with year nine and ten students winning bronze medals. Sue Speakman was the coach.
The West Devon team came joint seventh overall. Plymouth took the top place.
West Devon mayor Cllr Peter Hill attended the games and said the event was inspiring.
?The young people were fantastic. They did West Devon proud.?
Ian Hancock, West Devon Borough Council?s sports development officer who organised the team, said it was a great day.
?Everyone worked so hard and I was really proud of each and every one of them. There was a great atmosphere. The children had so much energy and were so well behaved.
?Special thanks goes out to all of the dedicated Team Managers, assistants, officials and umpires who have given up hours of their valuable time to host trials, select teams and coach the participants prior to the games.?
Ian said planning has already started for next year?s event with a team managers meeting planned.

FC and Tavistock College; hockey supported by Tavistock Hockey Club and Kelly College; netball supported by Kelly College and the Okehampton netball league; tag rugby supported by the Active Devon Sports Partnership; swimming supported by Tavistock and Okehampton Swimming Clubs, and tennis supported by Tavistock Tennis Club.
